Choosing Between a Hollywood, Brazilian, or Bikini Wax: A Clear Guide

So, you’ve decided to go for it. Getting a bikini wax, that is. But now what? All these different options… At Harley Waxing, we understand that booking the right service for you can be a daunting task. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to explain the differences between Hollywood vs Brazilian vs Bikini, set expectations, and offer practical care tips.

What is a Hollywood Wax?

For a completely clean, hair-free look, all hair is removed from the pubic region – front, labia, and between the buttocks.

What is a Brazilian Wax?

This option removes hair from the labia and perianal area, just leaving a small strip or triangle on the pubic mound. Some clients start with Brazilian and later transition to Hollywood.

What is a Bikini Wax?

For a quick cleanup to get you ready for the beach, edges around standard swimwear are tidied up so no pesky hairs will peek out while you’re having fun in the sun.

Pain, Prep, and Aftercare

Some discomfort during waxing treatments is normal. But proper technique and the use of high-quality wax can make a real difference. We advise clients to exfoliate 24 to 48 hrs before the appointment – this will help to remove any dead skin cells.

Try not to use heavy lotions on the day, as this can interfere with wax efficacy. Caffeine can heighten sensitivity, so it might be best to skip that latte. Afterwards, wear loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics. To help lessen irritation, avoid heat or friction for at least 24 hrs. Start exfoliating gently 2 to 3 days after your session, and continue 2 to 3 times per week to prevent ingrown hairs.

How Often Should You Book?

Consistency is key here. Regular appointments will ultimately result in finer regrowth, making waxing sessions quicker and easier over time. We recommend having a Hollywood or Brazilian every 4 to 6 weeks. A Bikini can be a bit more flexible, but it’s still worth maintaining. Leaving too much time in between waxes allows hair roots to re-establish themselves, subsequently causing unnecessary discomfort.

Which Wax Type Should Professionals Use?

  • Film Wax: This formula melts at low heat to be extra gentle, yet highly effective. Perfect for Hollywood or Brazilian waxing. Applied very thin, it sets quickly and removes cleanly with minimal skin pull. Good for shorter, coarse hair in delicate areas.
  • Hot Wax: A long-standing salon staple for intimate and smaller areas (bikini, underarms, face).

Choosing What’s Right for You

Hollywood vs Brazilian vs Bikini: Ultimately, this comes down to personal preference. Go for a Hollywood if you prefer a totally bare feel. Brazilian, if you’re more comfortable having a little bit of hair left. Otherwise, opt for a bikini for a quick, swimsuit-ready look.
