Hollywood Waxing Pain: How Much Does It Hurt and How Do You Reduce It?

Full Post

The Real Talk on Hollywood Waxing Pain

At Harley waxing, we are often asked: Does getting a Hollywood wax hurt? The short answer is: Yes. The intensity varies from person to person and depends on several factors, including stress levels, hormones, and medications. Adding to that, everyone has a different pain threshold. In this article, we offer insight as to what causes pain during waxing, as well as advice to alleviate it.

How Pain Happens

Waxing removes hair from the follicle, which is adjacent to a sensory nerve ending, causing a stinging sensation. These nerves are particularly numerous in the pubic area. Hair texture, density, and growth stage also play a role. Coarse hairs with strong roots are more difficult to remove, resulting in more discomfort. Regular waxing prevents roots from growing back strong, so over time, waxing becomes less painful.

What You Can Do Before Your Appointment

  • Gently exfoliate the area 24 hrs before your appointment to get rid of any dead skin cells. This helps wax adhere better to the hair itself.
  • Keep skin moisturised, as supple, healthy skin responds better to waxing.
  • Avoid intense exercise, caffeine, and alcohol: these can all increase skin sensitivity.
  • Time your visit to fall mid-cycle. Just before and during periods, is when the skin is most sensitive.
  • If you have a low pain threshold, taking a painkiller 30 minutes before a session can help alleviate pain. Ibuprofen or paracetamol is good, but avoid aspirin as its blood-thinning properties can cause unnecessary bruising or even bleeding.

Aftercare That Makes a Difference

  • Wear loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics on the day.
  • Avoid the sun, hot baths or showers, and intense exercise for 24 hrs afterwards.
  • Start exfoliating gently 2 to 3 days after your session, and continue the regimen 2 to 3 times a week to keep skin free of dead skin cells that could block follicles and cause ingrown hairs.

Technique Trumps Toughness

Choosing a well-trained, professional waxing therapist is essential. Using premium quality products and the correct techniques – working in small sections and supporting the skin throughout – will go a long way to ensure a more comfortable waxing session. Our Harley Film and Hot waxes are formulated to melt at low temperatures and, together with a Pre-waxing Oil, shrink wrap the hair to minimise pulling on the skin. Afterwards, an After Wax oil or Soothing Gel should be applied to calm the skin.

Final Word

A certain amount of discomfort is unavoidable when having a Hollywood wax, but with a few adjustments, it is completely manageable. Taking care of your skin before and after waxing, using proper technique, and the correct product choice can make Hollywood waxing a worry-free experience with many more benefits than drawbacks.

Upgrade comfort where it counts. Switch to a low-temperature film wax engineered for intimate zones.
