We recently asked the fantastic team in the Harley Wax office to name the one question that their clients most often ask them. There was not a moment’s hesitation before the answer came. Film wax. What is it? How is it different from other waxes and which treatments should it be used for? But, perhaps most importantly. However, the most frequent question is “How to use film wax?”
Consequently, we decided to answer all these questions in one easy “How To” article any salon owner or wax therapist can use as a basic guideline when venturing into the exciting world of this wonderful wax. We’ll explain what makes this wax product unique, how to use it to achieve longer lasting results and how you can get your hands on a sample to “test drive”.
What is film wax and why is it different from other waxes?
Film wax is an amazing advancement in waxing technology. It is a hybrid between a Hot Wax and a Strip Wax – optimised to possess all the best characteristics of each. Its application is as comfortable as a conventional hot wax, paired with the lightweight “spread-ability” of a strip wax. As the wax shrink-wraps itself around the hair, it results in a much less painful hair removal treatment that effortlessly removes hairs as short as 1mm. (This totally eliminates the need for the dreaded tweezers!) And as an added benefit, Harley Film Wax is a very economical wax, as you only need to apply an incredibly thin layer of it.
First Things First
To maximise the best results when heating the wax place the wax in the heater and turn it on to a high heat setting. The wax will melt and become very runny; this is the correct consistency at this stage. Stir well and reduce the heat by turning the heater down to a moderate to low heat setting. This is now perfect for use. Test the wax on the inside of your wrist to make sure it is at a comfortable temperature.
Film Wax Top Tip
When heated the wax should have the consistency of thick paint or honey. When loading your spatula, you should be able to turn it two or three times to have a good dollop on the top that doesn’t run off if you stop twirling the spatula. If the wax drips while you twirl – it is too hot. If it creates threads when you turn the spatula, it is too cool.
Application Tips
- Cleanser & Toner
Prepare the area you intend to wax by cleansing it with the Harley Cleanser & Toner to ensure a hygienic waxing experience. - Pre-wax Oil
Next, apply a very thin layer of the Harley Pre-Waxing Oil. It creates a lipid barrier between the wax and skin allowing the wax to pull the hairs out without pulling the skin. This way you reduce the occurrence of redness and ensure a more comfortable treatment. - Applying the wax
It’s very important to note that, unlike hot wax, film wax is applied in the direction of the hair growth. Moving swiftly, load your spatula and spread the wax onto the skin in a very thin layer. (If the wax makes strings that resemble candyfloss when you lift the spatula, it is too cool.) Make sure to slightly lift the spatula at the end of the movement in order to leave a thicker edge – this will enable you to grip the wax for removal. Wave over the patch until the wax strings snap off. Important: The main difference between film wax and hot wax is that hot wax remains on the spatula when applying in order to master the figure of 8 pattern, which lifts the hairs into the wax. Film Wax is deposited onto the skin before spreading in order to create a large, thin and even patch. - Removing the wax
Wait till the wax has cooled in place, become firm and no longer sticks to your fingers when you tap it. Then flick up one of the thicker edges, grip it firmly, and hold the skin with your other hand. Proceed by removing the film wax like you would with hot wax. Immediately apply firm pressure with your hand to soothe the area. - After Care
Apply the Harley Wax Aloe Soothing Gel immediately after the treatment. You could use a cotton pad or simply apply it directly to the skin in a massaging action. The cooling aloe vera will help calm and soothe the skin.
Which treatments should you use film wax for?
Film wax is so versatile that, if used correctly, it could be used for almost all wax treatments. It takes a little practice to get the application right for some treatments. However, it is especially suited to facial and Brazilian waxes in particular. The extremely low-melting temperature contributes to a much more comfortable treatment for your client.
