Do you have tattoos and wonder if waxing over them would be OK? Or are you already a waxing aficionado and want to get inked? Fear not – waxing before and after getting tattooed is absolutely fine. In fact, it can actually be beneficial! There are a few rules, though…
Skin Structure
First, let’s have a look at the structure of human skin. It consists of 3 layers: epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and serves as a protective barrier. It also contains melanocytes, which give skin its colour. Next, the dermis supports the epidermis and contains the hair follicles and blood vessels (among other things). The hypodermis provides insulation and supplies nutrients to the outer skin layers.

The Waxing Process
A waxing therapist will thoroughly cleanse and prepare the skin, apply hot, film or strip wax and then quickly remove it, pulling out the hair in the process. This removes hair from the follicle that is situated in the dermis. At the same time, waxing has an exfoliating action. It affects the epidermis by lifting dead skin cells sitting on the surface.
The Tattoo Process
Having a tattoo goes a little deeper. Tattoo artists deposit ink into the dermis using a tattoo machine fitted with needles. To do this properly, the skin’s surface must be completely free of hair. That’s why artists shave the area before starting. They may still do this even if the area has been waxed, just to make sure there is absolutely nothing in the way.
Tattooing essentially causes a wound in the skin that typically heals in 4 to 6 weeks. Use proper tattoo aftercare as advised by your artist to assist in the healing process.
Tattoos Before Waxing
The most important thing here is to wait until your tattoo is fully healed. Waxing over it too soon will be extra painful, and can even cause infections and damage your design and skin. It’s just not worth it.
A layer of dead skin cells causes dullness. Waxing can actually enhance the appearance of tattoos because of its exfoliating effect. And having no hair covering it up is a no-brainer.
Waxing also lasts much longer than shaving and causes fewer ingrown hairs or unsightly bumps. Smooth, moisturised skin shows off tattoos the best!
Some redness and discomfort are normal after waxing and should dissipate after 24 to 48 hours if the recommended aftercare is followed. Harley Waxing products are gentle on the skin, especially variants formulated with Titanium Dioxide. Though it is always advisable to have a patch test before treatment.
For optimal results, visit a professional waxing therapist.
Waxing Before Tattoos
After waxing, wait at least 1-2 weeks before getting inked. Skin needs to heal properly, and microlesions can’t be seen with the naked eye. Healthy skin is essential for the best tattoo experience. Double-check with your artist before your appointment as to what they recommend. Some might prefer to shave the area themselves or do it anyway to ensure there are no baby hairs that can get in the way.
Be kind to your skin. Wear loose-fitting clothing and follow proper aftercare procedures – no sun, no sweat, no hot baths/showers and no perfumed lotions for 24 to 48 hours after waxing.
Risks
Waxing too soon after getting tattooed (or vice versa!) can lead to inflamed, irritated skin and damaged tattoos. Why risk it? Follow our advice and you’ll be fine.
If, by any chance, you experience any unexpected after-effects (e.g. swelling, itchiness or infection), consult your waxing therapist or tattoo artist.
The Bottom Line
What’s the point of getting a cool tattoo if it’s not going to look awesome? Following proper care instructions and communicating with both your tattoo artist and waxing therapist will ensure the best results.
